Stoneclough

More Goldline Trophy quarter-final action, with the venue the Brook Street home of West Lancashire League Premier Division side Stoneclough, who were beaten finalists in this competition at the Reebok Stadium two seasons ago.

Few of Lancashire's old spinning mills can be better preserved than the Kearsley Mill in the nearby village of Prestolee, and it provides a stunning backdrop at one end of the ground on the far side of the River Irwell.

Stoneclough lies in the built up area between Bolton and Manchester, yet few grounds can be more surrounded by trees.

The greenery extends pretty much all the way around the ground, although at this time of year, retrieving lost balls can be something of a nightmare.

Tonight's visitors are North West Counties League Division One side Atherton Collieries, but having been involved in a FA Cup replay just two days previously they are a little below full strength, so the likely outcome is difficult to call.

Stoneclough make the brighter start, and are rewarded when they take a 14th minute lead, Nick Fisher holding off his opposing centre half Chris Lawton from Paul Makinson's long ball before finishing confidently.

The hosts are very much on top, with a Nick Fisher header beating Colls keeper Josh Harris only to be cleared off the line by Steve Brockley, and they add a second goal five minutes into the second half when Liam Morrison's shot finds the target.

Colls best effort of the evening sees Steve Wallace's free kick turned over the bar by Craig Tebay, but Stoneclough are very deserved winners, and the margin could easily have been more than 2-0, with Nick Fisher having a further chance that Chris Lawton got back to block on the line.
